CUSTOMS GUIDE - MALTA

Whether you are returning to the Malta or going there for the first time, there will inevitably be questions that you would like answered prior to your move. The following guide will hopefully provide you with the information you need for importing household goods and personal effects from Ireland.

You should note the additional charges might be incurred if you import prohibited or restricted items. These charges, along with taxes, duties, storage, demurrage, customs / agriculture inspection charges, fumigation, handling/special cleaning charges resulting from inspection, delivery that can only be serviced by ferry or delivery above 2nd floor are not included in your quotation.

Customs Clearance

For customs clearance of used personal & household goods the owner must be present in Malta, prior to arrival of the shipment in order to sign the relative customs documentation and declarations and produce the following documentations:-

  • Detailed Household goods inventory (Supplied by Careline International).
  • Permanent resident permit from finance minister in Malta or work permit from Expatriate division.

For customs clearance of used motor vehicle the owner must be in Malta, prior to arrival of the vehicle in order to sign the relative customs documentation and declarations and produce the following documentations:-

  • Permanent export certificate of vehicle.
  • MOT or test certificate for road worthiness.
  • Green card insurance valid for Malta.
  • Car must be registered in the owners name for over 6 months.
  • Driving in malta is right hand drive and lead free petrol is available, however, left hand drive cars are allowed

Duties/taxes

Only used personal and household goods may be imported free of duties/taxes if:-

Owner is a returned migrant or Maltese national who has been away from Malta for over 18 months.

Foreign nationals taking permanent residency in Malta may import there used personal & household effects plus 1 second hand motor vehicle (Which is subject to 11% up to 16.5% registration tax plus VAT).

Foreign National taking up temporary residency or having a work permit, may import their used personal & household effects free of duty (BUT CASH GUARANTEE MUST BE LODGED WITH CUSTOMS AUTHORITIES, WHICH WILL ONLY BE REFUNDED AFTER IT IS ASCERTAINED, THAT OWNER HAS RESIDED IN MALTA FOR A PERIOD OF 200 DAYS, NOT CONSECUTIVELY IN ONE YEAR AND FOR WORK PERMIT HOLDERS UPON EXPORTATION OF GOODS ON TERMINATION OF WORK PERMIT)

All new items must pay import duties/levies/VAT according to harmonized system tariffs. An Eur 1 Certificate is necessary in order to be able to pay import duty, at a preferential rate.

Prohibited or restricted articles

  • Drugs, narcotics, firearms and weapons.
  • All firearms and weapons are subject to a police license and will not be released until necessary licenses and weapons officer approves permit. (It is requested to supply make, model, country of manufacture, serial number and other specifications).
  • Trees, plants and shrubs (Phytosanitory certificate required.
  • Dish atennas, cordless and mobile phones, air band receivers or transmitters require an import license. (It is requested to supply make, county of origin, seal number and full specifications).

Groupage Containers / Part Loads To MALTA

Not everybody has a full house contents to move. Some people want to share a container of just move a few boxes of personal effects to Malta.

To cater for this market we work agents in London and Malta.

Careline International Moving & Storage will export wrap and pack your household furniture and effects at your residence anywhere in Ireland and deliver them to our agent in London. There they will be shipped in a groupage container to Malta for custom clearance and delivery to your residence on a part load basis by our agent.

Transit time is 8 - 12 weeks.

Terms & Conditions Of Part Load Collection / Delivery

  • The collection / delivery is at our convenience.
  • The collection / delivery could be any time from 8am to 8pm from Monday to Sunday.
  • The collection time & date may not be confirmed until the day before. We will give as much notice as possible. (Usually 3 days).
  • If you cannot accept delivery for any reason, your goods will be held in storage until the next part load delivery in your area and storage charges may apply.
